How to Know If What You’re Hearing Is From God

If you have ever wondered, Is this God or is this just me? you are not alone.

One of the most common questions I hear from Christian women is how to know whether what they are sensing, hearing, or feeling is truly from God. Especially in seasons when faith feels dry or God feels quiet, discernment can feel difficult.

But Scripture gives us gentle guidance.

First, God’s voice brings peace.
Even when He convicts or redirects us, there is a calm reassurance beneath it. Fear driven thoughts rush, pressure, and confuse, but God’s voice settles your heart (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Second, God’s voice always aligns with Scripture.
God will never contradict His Word. That is why Scripture becomes so important when emotions feel unreliable. His written Word anchors His spoken guidance (2 Timothy 3:16).

Third, God’s voice draws you closer, not further away.
God does not shame you into distance. His voice invites intimacy. If what you are hearing leads you to withdraw from Him, it is worth pausing and returning to truth (James 4:8).

Fourth, God often speaks gently.
We expect thunder, but Scripture shows us whispers. Elijah did not hear God in the fire or the earthquake, but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). God often speaks through subtle nudges, quiet thoughts, or a simple knowing.

Fifth, God’s voice produces fruit over time.
You may not feel instant clarity, but what comes from God will eventually lead to peace, trust, patience, and spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22–23).

And finally, God responds when you call.
This one is personal for me.

During the pandemic, I developed a painful hole in the roof of my mouth that made eating uncomfortable. One day, without planning or formality, I whispered a simple prayer. God, I just wish this pain would go away so I can enjoy eating again.

That was it. No structure. No long prayer.

Later that same day, I realised I was eating without pain. It was gone.

That moment reminded me of a truth I still return to. God hears honest prayers. Even whispered ones. Even simple ones. Even when faith feels dry.

“Call to Me and I will answer you.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

If you are learning to discern God’s voice, start there. With honesty, Scripture, and trust that He is already near.
